Putting God's Word into Practice…

1 John 5:13-15 ~ A Prayer Away

on March 19, 2014

I write these things to you WHO BELIEVE in the name of the Son of God that you may KNOW that you have eternal life.  And this is the CONFIDENCE that we have toward him, that if we ask ANYTHING according to his will he hears us. And if WE KNOW that he hears us in WHATEVER we ask, WE KNOW that we have the requests that we have asked of him. (13-15)

I carry a note in my purse from an older gentleman who wrote to us to encourage us in the church planting process regarding the unending faithfulness of God.  That note gives me confidence in times of weakness.  According to John, he was writing the believers to give them confidence in God–confidence in their salvation that leads to eternal life and in God’s ability to hear and answer prayers!

Some scholars think that John wrote these three letters after he had the experience that led to the writing of the book of Revelation.  If that is the case, then John saw the throne room of God.  He saw the “golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints,” whose smoke fills the presence of God.  (Revelation 5:8) Our prayers are a fragrant offering continually burning before the Lord. We can have confidence that our prayers will be answered according to His will IF:

  • We are believers.
  • We pray according to God’s will.
  • We believe He hears us.

How awesome is it that we have a Living, all-powerful God who not only deserves praise and thanks in prayer but also wants to hear our requests!  We have the privilege of asking Him to take action on our behalf and on behalf of others.  He hears our prayers in real time–no matter what time.  And since His answers are always in accordance with His will, we can trust that whatever response we receive from Him is good and right.

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name.  Thy kingdom come, THY WILL BE DONE on earth as it is in heaven…
