Putting God's Word into Practice…

1 John 2:7-17 ~ Love People–Not Things

on January 22, 2014

Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness.  Whoever LOVES his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling.  But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes…DO NOT LOVE the world or the things in the world.  If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For all that is in the world–the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions–is not from the Father but is from the world.  And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. (1 John 2:9-11, 15-17)

LOVE–the greatest virtue, the greatest commandment–is the key to all of the Christian’s life.  When we are LOVING God and people, it is impossible for us to be walking in sin.  When we are LOVING God and others, it is impossible to be out of fellowship with them.  LOVE brings light into the world (2:10).  LOVE dispels darkness (2:8).  LOVE prevents stumbling in life (2:10).  LOVE gives direction and purpose to life (2:11).

BUT THE WORLD…convinces us to love ourselves and our possessions and our desires instead of God and others.  Everything of this world promises physical pleasure, elevates the joy of amassing possessions, and/or enables personal pride in our achievements and accumulations.  This world’s system deceives us into spending our lives and resources on things that don’t last, don’t satisfy, and usually end in disillusionment.

John was writing this letter to tell us the path to unity, fellowship, and complete joy.  LOVE! LOVING God and others more than self and stuff is that path!  LOVE is God’s will for His people!

Is there anything I love more than God?  Do I love myself more than others?  Do I love things more than people? More than God?  How can I show love today?
