Putting God's Word into Practice…

1 Thessalonians 5:12-28 ~ Paul’s Final Instructions

on January 14, 2013

Paul wrote a very concentrated list on how believers in Jesus Christ are to live in this fallen world filled with fallen people.  I encourage you to prayerfully read through this list looking for weaknesses in your life, and ask God to help grow you in those areas.

  • Show respect and highly esteem in love those with spiritual authority who work, labor and warn us. (Pastors, Elders, Deacons)
  • Have relational peace with other believers in Jesus.
  • Admonish the idle–warn the lazy, undisciplined. (Since I have a 13 year old son, I’m getting a lot of activity on this one.  However God has convicted my heart on the “patiently” part.)
  • Give courage to the fainthearted
  • Help the weak
  • Be patient with all of these–idle, fainthearted and weak.
  • ALWAYS seek to do good to EVERYONE
  • Rejoice ALWAYS
  • Pray without ceasing–constant communion with God
  • Give thanks in ALL circumstances
  • Don’t quench the Holy Spirit by despising prophecies. (When people speak words of truth to you, test them and hold fast to what is good even when the truth hurts.)
  • Abstain from EVERY form of evil

Although God has called us as His followers to live like this, in our own strength we cannot follow this list of behaviors.  As we surrender these areas, our emotions and our relationships to God; God Himself works His perfect peace into our lives.  He makes us wholly holy and completely blameless.  He who calls us to live this way is FAITHFUL, and He will surely accomplish it in us (5:24).  What an amazing promise!  Oh how I need God’s peace and power in my life!
