Putting God's Word into Practice…

Colossians 3:18-4:1 Renewing My Mind: Lesson 1

on January 2, 2013

Colossians 3:23-24 WHATEVER YOU DO, WORK HEARTILY, AS FOR THE LORD and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward.  YOU ARE SERVING THE LORD CHRIST.

Prior to these verses Paul wrote to the Colossians about how to work as a wife, husband, child, employee and boss.  Anyone who is working for the Lord can:

  • be a respectful wife
  • be a loving husband
  • be an obedient child
  • be a diligent employee
  • be a fair boss

I need to serve others as though I am serving Christ–sincerely, selflessly, unbegrudgingly, joyfully, and with my best energy, effort and attitude.

Our fear of the Lord should cause us to work heartily in all circumstances.  What does it mean to fear the Lord?  Regard Him in everything!  Live each moment as though He is part of my family: it is Jesus’ clothes I’m washing, Jesus’ dishes I’m doing, Jesus I’m teaching spelling to, Jesus who I’m serving dinner to, Jesus who is sick and needs extra care.  Jesus is near–He hears how I’m treating others.  He sees my heart’s attitude and motives. And Jesus is the one who is doling out paychecks!  He rewards servants and pays back wrongdoers.  He is a just and fair God.

Renewing my Mind: Lesson 1: Think about service and people differently.  See Jesus in everyone and serve accordingly.
