Putting God's Word into Practice…

John 4:1-45 Wow!

on May 15, 2012

“For God so loved the WORLD that He gave His one and only Son that WHOEVER believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

When Jesus left Judea for Galilee it says, “He had to pass through Samaria.”  Samaria was a land disdained by Jewish people because of its people intermarrying with Gentiles.  Jewish people called Samaritans, “dogs.”  Most Jewish people travelled around Samaria to stay “clean.”  Jesus did not have to pass through Samaria because it was the only route; He was compelled to pass through Samaria because He did not come to condemn but to save the whole world!

Jesus was weary and thirsty, but it didn’t get in the way of His love and mission to save by sharing truth with those in His path.  He used His humanity!  Jesus sat at the Samaritan well and a woman came for water.  She was about to get far more than she expected!  Jesus spoke to the woman first, mentioning something common–thirst and water.  Then He took the opportunity to speak about spiritual truths.

Jesus offered the woman at the well living water.  All God offers is fully satisfying and never runs out.  Instead we are like the people mentioned in Jeremiah 2:12-13.  “Be appalled, O heavens, at this; be shocked, be utterly desolate, declares the LORD, for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.”  We try to make a way ourselves and then we strive and struggle to stay full and satisfied.

Jesus prodded the woman by asking her to bring back her husband.  She answered that she had no husband and Jesus said, “You’re right!  You’ve had five husbands and the man you’re with now is not your husband.”  Talk about a woman who felt shamed, condemned, used and insecure.  I’ve been that woman!  Women everywhere feel like that woman.  They don’t need more condemnation, more people judging or ignoring them.  THEY NEED JESUS!

Jesus rewarded her truth (18) with His truth.  In verse 25 we see her hope was in the Messiah.  Jesus declared, “I am He!”  This is one of the first and few times Jesus declared Himself Savior and He did it to an unclean, Samaritan woman!  He risked His reputation for her salvation.

Verse 28 says the woman left her water jar (my pastor said, “and her shame”) and went to town to tell others about Jesus.  Because of the woman’s testimony and Jesus’ words of truth and life, MANY believed Jesus was the “Savior of the world.”

I’ve been that woman at the well–I have a testimony.  How am I sharing it?  Who am I sharing it with?  Am I willing to risk my reputation to point others to Jesus? Am I willing to lay my weariness aside for the sake of the message of Jesus?

Jesus already knows the things you’ve done.  He loves you and came to rescue you and fill you and satisfy you!  Come to Jesus!  He is the Savior of the WHOLE world and WHOEVER believes in Him will be saved!
