Putting God's Word into Practice…

Luke 10:25-42 Just Some Quick Notes

on April 6, 2012

Verses 25-37.  A lawyer tested Jesus!  Jesus turned the tables and questioned the lawyer.  The lawyer answered correctly and Jesus said, in essence, “Good, now do it.”  The lawyer in an effort to “justify himself” asked Jesus another question.  Jesus responded with a story that taught about the value of compassion and mercy and another command to “go do it.”

A lawyer would understand justice and justification, but not necessarily mercy.  It’s kind of like telling a butcher to be a vegetarian.

Verses 38-42.  What woman can’t relate to these verses about Mary and Martha!!  Words like distracted, serving alone, anxious and troubled easily characterize my life on a regular basis.  I love that Martha was working hard to serve physical food while Mary was sitting at Jesus’ feet receiving spiritual food.  Jesus said that Mary had chosen the “good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”  Physical food always leaves us empty and wanting.  All that work that Martha was doing was only going to meet temporary needs.  The food would soon disappear and pass through each person’s digestive system.  But Jesus’ food lasts forever and never runs out and completely satisfies!

Lord, teach me when to serve and when to sit!  Help me to fill up on Your Word and Your presence so I have something to offer others.  You are so wise and fulfilling!!!
